Conscious translating: key to mediating Reading in a foreign language

This article reports on a study that aimed to examine the role of conscious translating in foreign language reading comprehension. Verbal reports were used to elicit data gathered during reading comprehension and translation tasks performed by six intermediate-level Brazilian learners of English working in pairs. The results obtained indicate that the use of conscious translation for decision-making and problem-solving during foreign language reading enhances comprehension mainly by reducing interference and misunderstanding caused by uncontrolled, subliminal translation.
