Résumé

This article reports results of a study in which the attitudes of Brazilians, revealed in the written media, in relation to the foreign accent and the accent itself when speaking English are investigated. Through content analysis of newspaper and magazine articles, the results indicated that there is a common belief that a foreign accent is something to be eliminated from language learning. In addition, the analysis of the articles suggests a prejudice against certain varieties of English. The article has implications for such attitudes and concludes with suggestions for reflection on language teaching.
