Abstract

This study focuses on a basic resource found in foreign language dictionaries: phonetic transcription. Few English students succeed in using this tool adequately without having had any formal instruction. This study investigated whether or not:  a) Brazilian English teachers had been teaching these skills to their students, b) they had been instructed to do so, c) they could interpret phonetic transcriptions. The use of recordings of pronunciation in electronic dictionaries was investigated, too. The research technique employed was a questionnaire.
