Pedagogical Residency and English teaching: experimenting with teaching material development for a public school

The aim of this article is to present and discuss the development of teaching materials for English teaching used in public schools of the municipal system in the sertão of Pernambuco in the scope of the Programa de Residência Pedagógica sponsored by CAPES. Interpretative and qualitative in nature, since the researcher was also the teacher responsible for developing the materials and using them in the classroom, the study assumes the perspective of pedagogical intervention (DAMIANI et al., 2013). To that end, the first part of the article introduces the Residência Pedagógica and the institution that welcomed the program; the second part discusses the notion of material development and; the third part described the process of conception, development and use of teaching materials with secondary school English students. It was possible to redirect the practice of English teaching from the sixth to the ninth grade (respecting their specificities) by using teaching materials that aimed at linguistic development as well as interaction and student autonomy.
