Abstract

We perceive the term "Instrumental French" to be sometimes treated as a given, referring to French as a Foreign Language (FFL) courses organized around reading, or to FFL courses for specific purposes. Doubt is not cast the nature of this nomenclature, though. However, the literature on this subject indicates a miscomprehension of the definition of this mode of foreign language teaching, its goals, the methodological practices underpinning the definition, and the place it occupies in FFL teaching. The perception of this shortcoming remits us to the context in which this methodology arose and the ever-present need for its reconfigurations.
