Textual cohesion in Portuguese as a second language

Textual cohesion is one of the relevant features in the scope of research on mechanisms that trigger textuality. In this context, enlightened by principles of textual linguistics and language learning theories, the study describes aspects of cohesion in texts written by 49 Mozambican students of Honors in Mozambican Sign Language. This group of students has the Portuguese language course as a component of their program. Data analysis, based on qualitative and quantitative approaches, reveals that, undergraduate students face difficulties to write cohesive texts. Students’ difficulties in written texts regard, in general, sequential cohesion. Problems of textual cohesion involve the recurrence of segmental and super-segmental phonological sources, thematic progression through juxtaposition, and logical and semantic conjunction. However, students’ difficulties highlight the need to improve teaching and learning of writing abilities, especially those regarding mechanisms of textual cohesion.
