This paper describes a needs analysis survey of hotel receptionist professionals as a starting point for the development of a task-based language syllabus. Following the procedures stated by Long (1985, 2005), the study initially identifies the needs of this professional to define the target tasks and their classification into task types. The data were collected through interviews, questionnaires and a non-participant observation of receptionists in their job routine. The data showed that the notions of target task and task type may be associated to the notion of discursive genre, as well as the conception of subtask may be viewed as a constituent stage of a genre. These results are expected to redirect the design of a task-based language syllabus for professional courses aimed at training receptionists or any other professional in the area of Tourism and Hospitality.
