Between the memory and the resistance:
a comparative study on the Talian and Pomeranian immigration languages in Espírito Santo

This paper aims to analyze the sociolinguistic situation of the Talian and Pomeranian immigration languages in Espírito Santo, highlighting their processes of maintenance, challenges, and revitalization perspectives. Based on authors such as Morello and Silveira (2022), as well as studies on language policies and the vitality of minority languages (Bremenkamp, 2014; Benincá, 2025), the text addresses historical, identity-related, and educational aspects connected to these communities. The comparative analysis reveals that although both languages share experiences of intergenerational loss and marginalization, Pomeranian shows greater vitality, as a result of co-officialization policies, educational initiatives, and stronger community engagement, while Talian remains more restricted to cultural expressions and the speakers’ affective memory. Finally, the article discusses the need for specific public policies, interdisciplinary academic research, and language transmission strategies that can enable the appreciation and continuity of these immigration languages as part of Brazil’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
