Abstract

This work aims to: 1) revisit the traditional concept of “pedagogical translation as an exercise in“ transcoding ”, an exclusively linguistic operation, still practiced in university teaching of foreign languages; 2) confront it with a new concept of communicative and interpretive translation, based on the Interpretative Theory of Translation, aimed at social interaction and textual meaning, which must be the true object of translation, be it pedagogical or professional; to show, by means of a comparative table, the uses and functions of translation, according to the focus given to it, thus justifying the need for a change in the approach to this modality of language use.
