Abstract

In this paper I provide a brief survey of the relation between translators and dictionaries. I quote the opinions of some translators about these reference works, show why monolingual dictionaries are necessary, devote a longer section to bilingual dictionaries, and deal with the problems of equivalence and the lexicographical information required in translation. Finally, I mention some empirical studies about sources of reference to which translators resort.
