Abstract

In this article we discuss the importance of oral genres in English language teaching. We assume that literary texts, besides potentially enabling the development of oral communication in a foreign language through discussions, can play an important role in shaping opinions of young students about the world and can change their way of seeing and reacting to it. Thus, we present an experience in which students in a plenary, led by the teacher (first author of this text), decided about the fundamental features of a "debate"; defined the criteria for the development and evaluation of a "Council of the rights of the Magi" in which they discussed "prejudice and racial segregation in Harry Potter". We argue that this potential that literature has to stimulate the oral genres production should be widely exploited in the school environment, mainly based on interpersonal interactions that encourage interaction with others and the consequent understanding of their differences and difficulties.

Vera Lúcia Menezes Paiva, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Vera Lúcia Menezes de Oliveira e Paiva é professora titular da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG e  pesquisadora do CNPq nível 1 C e apoiada pelo edital PPM da Fapemig. É mestre em Inglês pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e doutora em Letras, área de Linguística e Filologia, pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Atua na Graduação e na Pós-Graduação em Estudos Linguísticos. Coordena o Grupo de Pesquisa intitulado “Linguagem e Tecnologia”, registrado no CNPq, e é uma das pioneiras no ensino e pesquisa em educação a distância na área de Letras. Atualmente, coordena o Curso de Especialização em Linguagem Tecnologia e Ensino. É autora de livros e de inúmeros artigos e capítulos de livros publicados no Brasil e no exterior. É coautora das coleções de livros didáticos Alive!, para as séries finais do ensino fundamental, e Alive High, para o ensino médio, ambas aprovadas pelo PBLD.
