Les lais [Os lais], de Marie de France, são uma obra que data do século XII, escrita em francês antigo, totalizando doze curtas histórias — pertencentes ao gênero “lai” — que, inspiradas em contos da tradição oral, narram as aventuras de grandes cavaleiros. Assim, dentre as histórias contadas, algumas tratam de personagens já naquele tempo consagrados, como rei Artur e Tristão e Isolda, e outras trazem elementos que inspiram, mais tarde, a escrita de contos de fadas, como é o caso do lai “Yonec”, cuja tradução, em português brasileiro, apresento, de forma inédita, aqui. “Yonec” conta a história de Muldumarec, um cavaleiro que vive num mundo feérico, do qual também é rei, e que se apaixona por uma bela senhora, casada com um homem muito ciumento que a mantém presa numa torre. Depois de ouvir as preces da senhora por sua liberdade, Muldumarec, assumindo a forma de um falcão, vai visitá-la na prisão, e os dois, apaixonados, passam a se ver o tempo todo. É essa frequência que separa os dois amantes e causa o assassinato de Muldumarec, nas mãos do marido ciumento. Do amor entre o cavaleiro e a dama, nasce, contudo, um filho, Yonec, que, depois de crescido e uma vez tornado cavaleiro, vinga a morte do pai e da mãe, matando quem os havia separado.
