Résumé

Environmental issues rank among the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. This article explores the complementarity between the theoretical and methodological approaches of Political Arenas and Narratives in addressing conflicts and decision-making processes related to environmental issues. To this end, we conducted an extensive literature review and a qualitative analysis of research produced within the Postgraduate Programs in Social Sciences and Environment and Society at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). Our objective was to operationalise both concepts and assess how these approaches contribute to structuring academic inquiry. The findings suggest that identifying the functions of narratives within political arenas helps to uncover the complexity and contradictions inherent in socio-environmental dynamics. We conclude that addressing environmental challenges requires acknowledging multiple perspectives and social tensions to foster transformative action. This study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary and qualitative methodologies for understanding the social dimensions of environmental issues.

Amanda S. Silvino is a Technological and Industrial Development researcher at the Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerabilities Division at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). PhD in Environment and Society at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil), MSc. in Functional Ecology and Sustainable Development at the University of Sciences and Technology of Montpellier (UM2, France), BSc. in Biology at Federal University of Ceará (UFC, Brazil). She was an academic visitor at the Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL) at Indiana University (USA). She conducted post-doctoral research projects, at Michigan State University (MSU, USA) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).  Has experience in researching environmental narratives, socio-environmental conflicts, and socio-ecological systems, with a strong focus on biodiversity conservation, sustainability, and climate change.

 

José Eduardo Viglio , PhD in Social Sciences, Researcher, University of Campinas (Unicamp), Campinas, SP, Brazil

José Eduardo Viglio is a collaborator researcher at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). PhD in Social Science, MSc in Urban Engineering, BSc in Ecology, and a second BSc in Sociology.  He conducted post-doctoral research projects at the Center for Environmental Studies and Research at UNICAMP. Has experience in researching the sustainability transition of energetic systems, and socio-environmental conflicts, with a strong focus on the role of experts, sustainability, and climate change.

Jorge Calvimontes, PhD in Environment and Society, Researcher, University of Campinas (Unicamp), SP, Brazil

Jorge Calvimontes is a collaborator researcher at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). PhD in Environment and Society at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil), MSc in Conservación de Recursos Forestales from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, in Lima (2009), BSc in Biological Science at the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. He has experience in Environmental Science, Climate Change and Sustainability. He conducted post-doctoral research projects at the Center for Environmental Studies and Research at UNICAMP. He was a visiting researcher at Patrimoines locaux, Environnement et Globalisation (PALOC) at Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (Paris, France). He was part of the research team in the international "Gold Matters" project, which explored the trajectories, transformations, and possible futures of artisanal gold mining in the Brazilian Amazon.

Raíssa Resende de Moraes, PhD in Environment and Society, Researcher, University of Campinas (Unicamp), Campinas, SP; Staff member, Minas Gerais State Environmental Foundation, MG, Brazil

Raíssa R. Moraes is an Analyst at the State Environmental Foundation of the Minas Gerais state (FEAM, Brazil). PhD in Environment and Society at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil). MSc and BSc in Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV, Brazil). Has experience in the international "Gold Matters" project researching the relationship between mining and Indigenous peoples. Worked on environmental education, solid waste management, and wastewater treatment using microalgae, biochar, and soils. Currently works on ecological licensing and public inspection.

Lúcia da Costa Ferreira , PhD in Social Sciences, Retired Professor and Senior Researcher, University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil

Lúcia C. Ferreira is a full researcher and professor at University of Campinas. She has a bachelor's in Ecologia from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1980), a master's in Sociology and a doctorate in Social Sciences from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1996). She has experience researching and supervising theses and dissertations in Sociology on social conflicts, social action, biodiversity conservation, climate change, and environmentalism, especially in the Amazon and Atlantic forests. Coordinator of the "Ibero-American Network on Environment and Society Research: Human dimensions of climate and environmental changes in Protected and Vulnerable areas." Since 2011, she has coordinated a thematic Project, "Population growth, vulnerability and adaptation: ecological and social dimensions of climate change on the coast of San Paulo" (FAPESP in 2008/58159-7). She coordinated in Brazil the project financed by FAPESP Sustainability Transformations in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining: A Multi-Actor and Trans-Regional Perspective, FAPESP and Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action "Transformations to Sustainability"—ex-coordinator of the Doctorate in Environment and Society. IFCH NEPAM, University of Campinas (UNICAMP).
