Abstract

In line with transnational feminist translation studies, this paper analyses The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, by Angela Carter, translated into Brazilian Portuguese, aiming to investigate the way the twentieth century British writer is presented by the female voices that have edited, prefaced, and translated her in Brazil. The two Brazilian editions of the book are discussed, considering their proposals and approaches: the first, prefaced by Vivian Wyler, translated by Carlos Nougué and published by Rocco (1999); and the second, curated by Marina Colasanti, prefaced and translated by Adriana Lisboa and published by TAG/Dublinense (2017), in an editorial project run exclusively by women. The research investigates two dimensions: the issue of patronage, in which it is possible to relate Carter’s reception in Brazil with the feminist reading of her work made by Wyler, Colasanti and Lisboa in paratexts and metatexts; and the issue of rewriting, as the core of Carter’s literary creation, uniting aesthetic and political issues and subverting naturalized hierarchies. The aforementioned translation projects posit a discussion that is much needed in Brazilian culture, based on a feminist reading of Carter’s work.
