Based on Translational Stylistics (MALMKJAER, 2003, 2004), which is the linguistic analysis of translated texts in comparison to the literary source text to understand the translation shifts; and on Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), which regards language as producing meaning and seeks to understand how such meaning is realized on a certain text, this article delves into the short story Psychology (MANSFIELD, 2001) and three of its translations to Brazilian Portuguese: by Julieta Cupertino (MANSFIELD, 2000), Paola Castro Oliveira (MANSFIELD, 2015), and Denise Bottmann (MANSFIELD, 2016). It aims to verify how the Themes are realized in the corpus and how the characters manifest through Participant Ideational Themes and Elliptical Participant Ideational Themes. We also seek to verify how questions of gender are presented in the narratives (SIMON, 2005). To carry out the analysis, we addressed the following questions: a) How are the Themes realized in the corpus?; b) How do characters manifest when it comes to Participant Ideational Themes and Elliptical Participant Ideational Themes?; and c) What can be said about questions of gender and narrativity from the classification of Participant Ideational Themes and Elliptical Participant Ideational Themes? It is worth mentioning that the investigation of thematic structure, gender, and narrativity is not exhaustive, but it is a good example of how these topics can be related. The Themes were annotated manually in the electronic corpus and quantified through WordSmith Tools (version 4.0). We could conclude that thematic structure in the short stories, concerning translation, is not restricted, with a wide variety of Themes being observed. The source text and the target texts present a greater number of Multiple Themes than they do Simple Themes, the first ones being Interpersonal Themes and/or Textual Themes, which are connected to Ideational Themes. We could also conclude that, when it comes to an analysis of the total of female and male characters, female characters are more frequently realized than male characters. However, the same cannot be said when only the main female character and the main male character are analyzed.
