Este artigo apresenta uma tradução do conto “Mammon and the Archer”, de O. Henry. Ambientado na Era Dourada estadunidense, o conto foi publicado originalmente no jornal New York World e, mais tarde, em 1906, na aclamada coletânea The Four Million (Sianturi, 2023; Galens, 2003). Em “Mammon and the Archer”, o empresário Anthony Rockwall – detentor de grande riqueza, mas sem berço aristocrático – está disposto a provar ao filho Richard que o dinheiro é uma ferramenta capaz de alcançar praticamente tudo. Richard, embora tenha relações com a alta sociedade, não consegue declarar seu amor à Srta. Lantry, moça da elite, temendo ser rejeitado por não pertencer a tal círculo social exclusivo. A Srta. Lantry está prestes a partir para Europa, e Richard tenta obter tempo para conquistar a mão da moça. Além da sofisticada técnica literária, a narrativa apresenta, como observa Sianturi (2023), uma complexa interação entre capitais culturais, sociais e econômicos.
