Between Exoticization and Normalization: The Translation Solutions of the Fansub Group Legendas em Série for Idioms in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine TV series

This article aims to publicize the results of a Course Conclusion Work that sought to analyze the strategies used by the fansub group Legendas em Série for the translation of idioms, from English to Brazilian Portuguese, in two episodes from different seasons of the North American TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. To support this research, the theoretical contribution of Franco Aixelá (1996; 2020) on the strategies for the translation of Culture-Specific Items and studies focusing on amateur translation in the area of Audiovisual Translation (Díaz-Cintas & Sánchez, 2006; Díaz-Cintas & Remael, 2007) were used. The strategies used for the translation of the idioms were identified and the translators’ choices were analyzed to check if they were suitable to their context of use. The results showed that the amateur translators used more normalizing strategies when dealing with the idioms. Overall, it was concluded that the group's choices were effective in achieving its objectives. With this work, we sought to popularize research on fansubs, in addition to contributing to the study of useful strategies for this type of subtitling.
