“So, come on, and learn the character of every culture”: A New Poetic Translation of Georgics II by Virgil

Virgil is still recognized by many today as one of the greatest poets of all time. However, his recognition is due mainly to the Aeneid, as well as to the Bucolics, since few are the people who know his work entitled Georgics. Despite this, during a considerable part of the history of Virgil’s reception, the value of the Georgics was well recognized, counting among its enthusiasts such important names as those of Montaigne, Dryden, and Leopardi. I propose here a brief critical introduction for those who want to get to know not only an important poem by Virgil, but some fundamental aspects of Roman culture in general. I close my argumentation with a poetic translation of Georgics II into contemporary Portuguese, in which I explore questions presented in the critical introduction.
