This review addresses the book Finnegans Wakes: Tales of Translation (2022), by Patrick O'Neill, which charts the international history of translations of the novel Finnegans Wake (1939), by James Joyce (1882-1941). O’Neill presents and analyzes all 16 published complete translations of Joyce’s novel as well as the numerous partial translations into several languages. With chapters organized by decades and by specific languages, the book spans the period from the 1930s to the 2020s, covering the initial efforts to translate excerpts from Finnegans Wake even before its full publication in 1939, and also presenting translations that are currently in progress and expected to be published in the coming years. The author demonstrates, with several examples, that the translation process of Finnegans Wake involves transformation and expansion, rather than reproduction or clarification.
