Discourse, authorship and effects of meaning in academic writing

Abstract

In this paper, we aim to analyze academic writing from the point of view of materialist Discourse Analysis, grounded in the work of Michel Pêcheux. Based on the consolidated theoretical framework in the area, we seek to understand how the notions of text, writing and authorship can support the analytical gesture undertaken in this work. Our corpus of analysis is composed of discursive sequences extracted from texts produced by first-semester students of an undergraduate course in the field of Applied Social Sciences. Through the selection of these sequences, based on a gesture of interpretation that articulates the pendular movement inherent to Discourse Analysis, we will demonstrate how, through on a regularity, different forms of knowledge are linearized, revealing an authoritarian discourse that creates a sense of distance between subject and language.

Author Biography

Mônica Ferreira Cassana, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS

Professora Adjunta no Departamento de Letras Clássicas e Vernáculas da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Possui doutorado em Letras, com especialização em Teorias do Texto e Discurso, pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, finalizado em 2016. Concluiu mestrado em Letras na Universidade Católica de Pelotas, em 2011, e graduação em Letras - Licenciatura em Português e Espanhol e suas respectivas literaturas na Universidade Federal de Pelotas em 2008. Tem experiência como tutora do Programa de Educação Tutorial do curso de Letras no campus Bagé da Universidade Federal do Pampa, entre 2016 e 2018 e em coordenação de curso de graduação (UFPel, 2021-2023). É coordenadora do projeto de pesquisa Corpo-notícia e discurso jornalístico e membro do grupo de pesquisa Discurso, Arquivo, Autoria e Questões de Gênero. Nas atividades de ensino, atua nas áreas de produção textual, teorias do texto e do discurso.
