In search of the author:
the case of Idra Novey, translator of Clarice Lispector

This paper investigates references to the task of the translator found in Ways to Disappear(2016), published in Brazil as A arte de desaparecer (2017), by Idra Novey, then proposes possible relations between those references and her translation of A paixão segundo G.H., by Clarice Lispector. The hypothesis examined here is that, while openly declaring her wish to talk to Clarice in person and creating a plot about the search of an author by her translator, Idra has achieved an autonomous role regarding her translation project, which is in line with Roland Bathes’ “death of the author” (1988) and Haroldo de Campos’ conception of literary translation as re-creation (2010; 2013).
