Vocatives in the Spanish Subtitles of City of God

This article examines the translation of vocatives in the Spanish subtitles of the film City of God (2002), using an intersemiotic approach to audiovisual translation. Vocatives—highly sociopragmatic expressions—play a key role in constructing power relations and social identity among characters. The study classifies 108 instances of vocatives according to the translation technique used (adequate, inadequate, neutralization, omission) and the power dynamics between speakers. Findings indicate a predominance of omissions, especially in asymmetrical interactions, although most cases show some degree of visual or auditory compensation. The analysis suggests that while the Spanish subtitles tend to neutralize culturally marked expressions, the multimodal nature of cinema allows for partial preservation of pragmatic effects.
