From Euclides da Cunha’s “Os Sertões” to “The Campos brother’s sertões”:
a translation experiment
Keywords:
Translation, relecture, transformation, form, styleAbstract
This study uses contemporary reflections on translation to analyze the creative process the brothers Augusto and Haroldo de Campos employ in the translation or "transcreation" of Euclides da Cunha's historical novel "Os Sertões". In examining their method, special attention is given to the historical context, content, form and style of the text, not so much as constraints on the translation process but rather as features requiring adaptation through re-reading. The rationale is that the re-writing of the work brings a new literary creation into being. From this angle, as Thais Flores argues, "... the texts (original and target) should be viewed as signs one of the other" (DINIZ, 2003: 13).
