Sign Language Unwritten Translation: Reflections on Its Singularity and Features

Considering the current demands for translation processes that do not necessarily involve written texts, a reflection is presented on the singularity and features of the translation process that has its target text in a sign language recorded on video. To do so, it starts with the conceptualization of translation and interpreting processes and the differentiation between them. Then, data related to discussions and research that problematize the unwritten translation process — from written text into video-recorded sign language — are presented. Next, a denomination of such processes is offered, based on the concept of unwritten translation — that is, that translation in which the target text is in its oral modality and, therefore, is recorded in audio or video — as well as a first proposal of classification of the other related processes. Finally, characteristics of the unwritten translation from a written text (vocal-auditory language) into a signing text (gestural-visual language) recorded on video are presented. In addition, there is a demand for further studies and research on this written-signed process and on other translation processes that are within the unwritten translation.
