Abstract

The anthology “Estudos da Tradução e comunidade LGBT - Sobre vozes entendidas e transformistas textuais”, organized by Dennys Silva Reis and Vinicius Martins Flores, brings together eighteen authors with different approaches and perspectives regarding the field of translation and, specifically, in the field of LGBTQIA+ translation. The power of the text involves a mechanism composed of the elements of language, subject, culture and audience. The transit of these elements develops through translation, a process that is multiple. The work raises, among its various tensions, whether there are specific translations for the LGBT public, or whether there are indeed LGBTexts – written for and by the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the organizers, an LGBText and queer translation do not go beyond the domains of social interaction. This can be seen when coming across the history of queer translation in Brazil, widely presented and debated in the work. This review presents the main issues and debates raised in the volume and of some specific texts – chosen here because they propose a dialogue about the field of queer translation with other social segments that are also traditionally excluded and marginalized. These are chapters that discuss queer translation with people with visual impairments, hearing impairments, and deaf people, as well as about the processes involving audio description and Brazilian Sign Language, expanding the scope and reach of the reflections that permeate the book beyond the initial scope for which it is proposed.
