Performance of green manure crops grown in two seasons in the Cerrado of MatoGrosso do Sul

Abstract

This study was developed during 2004 at 2006 in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil, in a dark red latosol, with experiments spring/summer and fall/winter periods, aiming at assessing dry mass productivity, quantity, N concentration and seed/grain productivity from green manure: Crotalaria juncea, ochroleuca, mucronata, spectabilis and breviflora, Canavalia ensiformis (wonderbean), Canavalia brasiliensis (Brazilian jackbean), Mucuna aterrima (velvet beans), Mucuna pruriens, Cajanus cajan cv Fava Larga and IAPAR 43-Aratã. C. juncea, mucrunata, ochroleuca and dwarf pigeonpea accumulated the biggest dry mass quantities in spring/summer period, while wonderbean and Brazilian jackbean outstood. As for quantity and N concentration in the aerial part, C. mucronata outstood during spring/summer period. In fall/winter, wonderbean and Brazilian jackbean had the best performances. With regard to seed/grain productivity, wonderbean outstood in the spring/summer period, while in the fall/winter dwarf pigeonpeaand wonderbean over performed the other species.
