Abstract

Conventional agricultural systems have promoted deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, loss of soil fertility, dependence on inputs with a consequent increase in costs, the exodus and the masculinization of rural areas. The advertised productivity has served more to satisfy the interests of the market than to meet people's food needs. Agricultural systems that adopt agroecological practices favor the provision of ecosystem services and quality food. Agroecology is a multi, inter and transdisciplinary science, capable of sustaining agricultural systems, including animal husbandry, reducing environmental impacts, with quality food production, and economic profitability. This review aims to contextualize the challenges for agroecological animal husbandry and its possibilities of integration with plant production to balance various benefits in the environmental, health and economic areas.
