Between judges and colonels: A jusliterary dialogue with the regionalist novel “The Stocks”, by Bernardo Élis

Abstract

This article proposes a jusliterary analysis of the relationship between the constituted State and coronelism in the Brazilian border regions based on the novel The Stocks, by the regionalist Bernardo Élis. The objective is, through the plot, to demonstrate to what degree the literary work helps to explain the existing contradiction in the pre-capitalist models of production taking into account the predominant structures of domination in the agrarian environment. For this, it is based on the writings of the sociologist and professor Décio Saes, correlating his categories of analysis with the plot brought in the fictional narrative of the author from Goiás. Initially, an attempt is made to contextualize the publication of the novel O Tronco in the paradigm of the Brazilian agrarian issue, so that, then, it is possible to delimit such categories and their dialogue with the literary text so that, finally, critically analyze to what degree the literary work helps to understand the role of the legal phenomenon in the contradictory relationship between coronelismo and the bourgeois state. It is, therefore, a research developed mainly by bibliographic review and documental consultation, whose collected data are object of qualitative analysis.
