The present translation of La Condition Ouvrière by Simone Weil into Portuguese offers readers a seminal work that critically examines the condition of workers in the modern industrial system. Originally published in 1951 as part of the Espoir collection, directed by Albert Camus, the anthology of the same title compiles texts born from Weil’s unique experience as a factory worker. These reflections explore the social and economic dynamics that perpetuate oppression and alienation, highlighting the dehumanization caused by the loss of meaning in labor. Weil advocates for a reorganization of labor structures to transcend mere productivity, restoring human dignity, existential purpose, and a spiritual connection between workers, their activity, and the world. This translation was carried out by the French Language Translation Group of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Brasília.
