Abstract

Since December 2019, the world has been experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, which achieved Brazil in the first half of 2020. In Brazil, at least for most of 2020, the pandemic was minimized by federal government agencies, as well as by the executive chief. The pandemic spread throughout Brazilian territory and began to be monitored "minute by minute" by the press, whether national and/or local. Also in 2020, happened the municipal elections; which were directly affected by the pandemic, both as regards its realization and as one of the issues under discussion by candidates. This article, written at the height of the "second wave" of the pandemic, analyzed the local press in Ivaiporã-PR – Jornal Paraná Centro – as a historical object to analyze the present time, considering it a political agent when choosing positions and ways to inform the population about COVID-19, also taking into account the change of municipal public management.
