Thematic dossier

Guidelines for Thematic Dossiers

From time to time, the Journal may open calls for publications in Thematic Dossiers, to be organized by people linked to stricto sensu postgraduate programs in human and social sciences, both nationally and internationally, and at master’s and/or doctorate levels. Upon the call opening, specific guidelines will be established for the selection of proposals, formatting, assessment criteria, organizers’ role, submitted texts assessment, and schedule.

In general, the proposals for the thematic dossier will be made available, besides the norms specified in the calls, following the criteria below:

  1. To have a minimum and a maximum of approved articles to be stipulated by the calls, based on the selected texts by the organizers and by the Editorial Council, among those approved by the evaluators.
  2. The work submitted for the thematic dossiers must follow the norms and guidelines for authors, described in the section Submission on the Em Tempo de Histórias website.
  3. The texts submitted for the dossier that, by any chance, are not aligned with the dossier scope may be published in the section of free articles, depending on the authors´ choice.
  4. The assessment of the thematic appropriateness of the manuscripts to the dossiers will be carried out by organizers and by the editors.

Call for Proposals for Special Issues (2025)

 The student academic journal Em Tempo de Histórias invites upcoming researchers to submit Thematic Dossier proposals to be a part of its next editions. Up to four proposals will be selected in this call. Of the four approved proposals, two will be published directly in upcoming issues in 2026 and 2027, while the other two will be placed on a reserve list and may be published at a later date, depending on the availability of the schedule and editorial suitability.

  1. Dossier Selection

Each proposal must be composed of a minimum of three and a maximum of four proponents. All proponents must have institutional connection with strictu sensu postgraduate programs in Humanities or Social Sciences. It is mandatory to have the participation of:

  • at least one PhD student in History, with active institutional connection in a Brazilian postgraduate program;
  • proponents from at least three different academic institutions.

The participation of proponents enrolled in a non-Brazilian university under joint supervision, as master’s or a PhD student, will be considered an advantage in the evaluation of proposals. Institutional and international diversity are strongly advised.

  1. Formatting of the Proposal

The proposal of a thematic dossier must include:

  • Dossier title (maximum of six words; the proposal must include a portuguese version of its title);
  • Context of the origin of the idea for the dossier proposal (e.g. academic events; research groups; exchange programs; contemporary or current social or political debates etc.);
  • Justification, emphasizing the thematic relevance and its alignment with the journal’s mission to disseminate historical research and to foster methodological, theoretical and historiographical discussions;
  • Proposal summary in English or Spanish;
  • Proposal summary in Portuguese.

The dossier proposal must be presented in text format, with a maximum of 1,200 words (formatted in Georgia font, size 12, single spacing). The proposal must be submitted as a PDF via the registration form available on the Em Tempo de Histórias journal website. Submissions in Portuguese, English or Spanish will be accepted. In the registration form, the proponents must present:

  • a short biography of the proposers (maximum 150 words), including institutional affiliation, research area, link to Lattes CV and ORCID (or equivalent CV platforms for international proponents or those affiliated to international institutions);
  • a list of at least six reviewers, including their academic qualifications and institutional affiliation. This may include PhD holders, PhD candidates, doctoral students, masters, or master’s students, as long as they are affiliated to graduate programs in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  1. Evaluation Criteria

The proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • clarity and originality of the theme; suitability to the journal’s scope; alignment with the journal’s scope;
  • editorial feasibility, considering the coherence of the theme, the potential to attract submissions, and the composition of the proposing team;
  • institutional and international diversity of the team;
  • quality and consistency of the justification;
  • relevance and timeliness of the proposed debate.

The editorial committee may prioritize proposals that balance these criteria and it does not have the obligation to fill all the positions specified in this call.

  1. Responsibilities of the Proposal Organizers

The organizers of the selected dossiers commit to:

  • widely promote the call, joined by the journal’s secretariat and communications team;
  • recommend names of qualified reviewers; support the editorial organization of the thematic issue.

Important: the organizers will not have access to the evaluation process of the texts submitted to the dossier, which will be conducted exclusively by the section editors. Furthermore, the organizers are not allowed to publish articles in the dossier they organize, ensuring the impartiality of the editorial process. No monetary compensation is provided for the work associated with the publication of the dossier.

  1. Review of the submitted articles

Articles and research notes will be accepted. For the dossier to be published, at least five texts must be accepted through the evaluation process. If this number is not reached, the accepted articles may be redirected to other sections of the journal, with the authors’ consent, and the dossier proposal will be discontinued.

  1. Schedule

The dossier proposals will be evaluated in 2025, with implementation scheduled throughout 2026 and 2027, according to the editorial timeline approved by the journal’s editorial board.

  • Proposal submission period: June 10 to July 31, 2025
  • Results announcement: by November 15, 2025
