Abstract

Modelling in a broad sense is a vital component of acting, If we accept that politics is about how we can act upon pre existing power relations, then the understanding of these and the world in which they exist is paramount. But power comes in many guises, and the task of understanding the ever expanding cascade of commitments it entails is a highly synthetic one, as it encompasses language, technology, energy infrastructure, political organizations, economic systems and more. These of course are never found in isolation, so to understand them is not only to map these particular fields, but also their interaction. The complexity of each of these fields poses a problem in the sense that in order to tackle whatever question arises from them, one must always deal with incomplete information. This text starts from the premise that a philosophical position that is concerned with the relationship between economics and technology and its consequences, must have an adequate conception of technology. It targues for why the conception of technology accelerationism has is incompatible with a fully naturalized picture of reasoning, then it introduces what is believed to be a conception of technology that is coextensive with the project of naturalizing cognition, and how complexity science can be a useful tool for thinking about such matters. It finally reintroduces this philosophical substrate into a discussion about technical systems so as to test the validity of these claims.
