A Heavy Body, a Failing Voice, a Screaming Soul

This article accounts on the collaborative process developed by the team of the play The Whale (A Baleia), which premiered in June 2025 in Rio de Janeiro and was directed by Luís Artur Nunes. It focused on Charlie's stage design, a character played by the Brazilian actor José de Abreu. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the play integrated knowledge from medicine, speech therapy, body preparation and psychology in order to support an ethical performance, free from the stigma that surrounds obesity. The main strategies for vocal, body, and performance preparation adopted during rehearsals are described, as well as the team's studies in relation to people with obesity and the challenges faced in representing the physical and subjective dimensions of the character on stage. The article proposes a reflection on the possibilities of listening and refinement between art and care, revealing how the study of the body and voice in complex contexts can expand the practices of actors and directors.
