Abstract

The purpose of this article is to carry out a content analysis around the historical influence of ancient societies’ ideas regarding sustainable water management. Ancient civilizations developed models and practices for the drainage, intake and transport of rainwater and wastewater. Despite the Roman Empire and the Moorish domination, Lisbon maintained its characteristics until the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal, undergoing an urban and sanitary revolution, which lasted until the 19th Century, when the Portuguese Royal Family moved to Brazil. Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal, undergoing several alterations inherited from the models and practices of irrigation techniques, hydraulic engineering and architecture of Lisbon. Data compilation in electronic spreadsheets and the use of NVivo software facilitated organizing the information and conclude that sustainable management models can be replicated as an inheritance of ancient societies.

PhD student in Environmental Engineering at State University of Rio de Janeiro, Master in Environmental Engineering (2007), Specialist in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (2005) and graduated in Civil Engineering with emphasis in sanitary engineering (1999). Professional with experience in science and technology in civil and environmental engineering. External participant professor of postgraduate programs in environmental engineering in Macaé. Experienced in elaboration and execution of political-pedagogical projects in public environmental management policies with emphasis on studies and characterization of water resources, urban watersheds, and industrial and domestic effluents.

Rosa Maria Formiga-Johnsson, PhD in Environmental Sciences and Techniques, Professor, Departamento de Engenharia Sanitária e do Meio Ambiente, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

PhD in Environmental Sciences and Techniques (1998) and Master in Environmental Sciences and Techniques (1992) at the Université de Paris XII, France. Graduated in Civil Engineering (1987) at Federal University of Goiás. Currently adjunct professor at State University of Rio de Janeiro, in the Department of Sanitary Engineering and Environment. Director of Water and Territory Management at State Environmental Institute of Rio de Janeiro. She has been working in the areas of water policy, planning and management, participatory watershed management, water resource economics, environmental management, territorial planning, integrated natural disaster risk management and global climate change/vulnerability and adaptation.

Alfredo Akira Ohnuma Junior, PhD in Environmental Engineering, Professor, Doutorado em Engenharia Ambiental, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

PhD in Environmental Engineering Sciences (2008) and Master in Environmental Engineering Sciences (2005) at University of São Paulo. Graduated in Civil Engineer at Federal University of São Carlos (2000). Experienced in civil engineering, environmental recovery of watersheds, application of conservation measures and rationalization of water use, working mainly on the following topics: rainwater harvesting, green roof, hydro-meteorological monitoring, urban basins and urban floods. He has also experience in environmental licensing, with an emphasis on process management, analysis and review of environmental impact studies, strategic and organizational planning in QHSE. Currently an adjunct professor at State University of Rio de Janeiro, in the Department of Sanitary Engineering and Environment.
