Planting Trees and Producing Healthy Food: Climate Urgencies and Agroecology in Agrarian Reform Territories

The advance of financialization has intensified environmental, food and social crises, at the same time as it interests only one group of investors. The natural commons have become asset classes and investment opportunities in a process of speculation and commodification, intensifying Brazil's environmental and agrarian problems. This article problematizes the growing expropriation of nature's commons, and at the same time directs the analysis towards the National Plan “Planting Trees, Producing Healthy Food”, undertaken by the MST. Guided by qualitative research, the data collection techniques included a theoretical exploratory process and fieldwork. We argue that the Plan is an MST strategy for the expansion of Agroecology aligned with care for nature's common goods. The dimensions of Agroecology practiced by peasant agriculture are configured as a process of resistance and make an important contribution to the materialization of Popular Agrarian Reform.
