Abstract

The present study aimed to test the effects of alternative treatments for seed corn variety (IPR 114), stored in bulk and bagged spikes, in control of the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamaisMots). The treatments consisted of 5 kg-1mg powder corn gray shale, wood ash and diatomaceous earth (standard treatment). As a control, we used untreated seeds. The study was conducted in two different places simultaneously, in São Mateus do Sul and Ponta Grossa (PR) during the months from April to November 2009. The variables were the number of live insects, germination, vigor and degree of infestation, for the maize stored in spikes, and number of live weevils infestation for the maize stored in grain. In corn in bulk, inert dusts were effective in controllingS. zeamais, after 30 days of storage. In storage spikes, the results were not conclusive as the efficiency of the post.
