Abstract

The French philosopher Françoise Choay has been a reference for urbanism and cultural heritage studies. In order to understand the words appropriated by Choay and their different meanings, the books L'Urbanisme (1965) and The Rule and the Model (1980) were analyzed. The word model and its different interpretations were the critical focus of the two texts. Therefore, the tension between understanding and interpretation in Françoise Choay was pursued, new frameworks of her work, unveiling her statements and associated signs.

Virginia Pontual, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco; Centro de Artes e Comunicações; Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Urbano

Full Professor of the Postgraduate Programme in Urban Development at the Federal University of Pernambuco in 2018. She holds a Post-Doctorate at the University of Lille1, France, and at FAUUSP (2009-2010) and a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism from USP (1998). President of ANPUR - National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Urban and Regional Planning (2013-2015). Member of the Jury VII Brazilian Award for Urban and Regional Policy and Planning, doctoral category. Representative in the Advisory Committee (CA-SA) of CNPq, area urban and regional planning. Founder and Researcher of the Laboratory of Urbanism and Cultural Heritage, Researcher of the Network: Urbanism in Brazil. Member of the Lebret-Irfed International Network. CNPq 1B productivity scholarship holder. President of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Integrated Conservation (CECI, 2011-13). Full articles published in national and international journals, books, book chapters and communications in congress proceedings. Completed doctoral and master's degree orientations. Has experience in Architecture and Urbanism, with emphasis on Cultural History, working on the following themes: urban planning practices, professional trajectories, representations, critical fortune, city/text/significations and cultural heritage.

Júlia da Rocha Pereira, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco; Departamento de Arquitetura e Urbanismo; Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Urbano

Architect and Urbanist from the Federal University of Pernambuco (2009), with a master's degree in Cultural Heritage Preservation from the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute MP-IPHAN (2012) and a PhD in Urban Development from MDU-UFPE (2021). She was awarded the SWE - CNPq scholarship (sandwich doctorate) to carry out research in Italy, at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, in 2018. She worked as Head of the IPHAN Technical Office in Olinda (2013-2014), as Technical Coordinator of the IPHAN Superintendence in Pernambuco (2014), as an architect and urban planner of the PAC Historic Cities Programme - PAC CH - IPHAN (2014-2017) and as a professor of undergraduate courses in Architecture and Urbanism. Currently, she is developing post-doctoral research in the Postgraduate Programme in Urban Development at the Federal University of Pernambuco - MDU-UFPE, with a Junior Post-doctoral scholarship - CNPq and acts as a researcher at the Urbanism and Heritage Laboratory of UFPE.
