The present text is the transcript of the opening conference of the 4th Seminar Law, Research and Social Movements, held on September 16, 2014, at the Federal University of Paraná, accompanied by the discussion that followed it. On the occasion, the author presented themes from his book entitled Social Movements, Law and Politics of Land Reform, published in 2013. The conference deals with issues related to rural social movements, politics of land reform in Brazil, legal sociology of the judiciary, as well as epistemological and methodological elements about research activity.
