Care work and the production of feminine subjectivities

Based on gender studies and the sexual division of labor, this study seeks to problematize the care work and the production of feminine subjectivities in social policies aimed at motherhood and poor childhood in the Coal Region of Santa Catarina, between 1960 and 1984, with a focus on the work of the visiting sisters described in reports from the Sociedade de Assistência aos Trabalhadores do Carvão (SATC). Twenty-four reports were analyzed, selected from documents available at the Centro de Memória e Documentação (CEDOC) of the Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC). Throughout the analysis, it was observed that the visits carried out by the sisters mobilized two central categories of analysis: the relationship with the subjective construction of the woman-mother, marked by gender norms and by care work, and the connection established with social assistance through domestic labor and female participation in the private sphere of life.
