Este artigo aborda a forma como os missionários cristãos usavam as artes para promover conversões, sustentar a própria fé, praticar as devoções e levar a cabo os rituais religiosos. Trata, especificamente, da relação entre indígenas e missionários na Nova Espanha, demonstrando que a arte religiosa era vivida em um clima de força e temor. Com frequência, era o temor que levava os indígenas a procurar as missões e que os mantinha ali.
