SCIENCE, HISTORY AND MEMORY IN NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT, BY PATRICIO GUZMÁN
Keywords:
Patricio Guzmán, Cinematic documentary, Latin American politics, AstronomyAbstract
Based on the documentary “Nostalgia de la luz” (2010), by Patricio Guzmán, we analyze the relationships between the beginning of the process of occupation of the Chilean Andes by large international astronomical observatories from the 1960s onwards, the popular euphoria with the establishment of the socialist government of Salvador Allende (1970-1973) and the military coup that culminated in the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Merging historical temporalities and different knowledge – astronomy, history, geology, paleontology, archeology – the documentary under discussion is a potential for us to develop an analysis of the history of sciences committed to social criticism and connected knowledge, including that of cinematographic art.
