Abstract

D.H. Lawrence died in 1930 of tuberculosis. Writer of bodies embedded into the cycle of creation and destruction of nature — a cycle whose reification is the epitome of industrialized society — in his slow and feverish march towards death, Lawrence drafts a metaphysics of ruin. This paper reflects on two essays, a novel and a poem of his, conceived as texts in which the ruin of the novel, more than a theme, is the reason for the narrative’s impossibility in being constituted as totalizing experience and writing. The analysis is permeated by Theodor W. Adorno in the dialectic of the novel, and in the tension between culture and death.

Maria Lua Albus, Universidade do Estado da Bahia

Graduanda em Letras - Língua Inglesa e Literaturas pela Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB - DCH IV - Jacobina), bolsista de Iniciação Científica do CNPq, parte do grupo de pesquisa Desleituras desenvolvendo projetos relacionados à crítica e reescrita de textos modernistas em Língua Inglesa.

José Carlos Felix, Universidade do Estado da Bahia

Possui graduação em Letras pela Faculdade Estadual de Ciências e Letras de Campo Mourão (1998), mestrado em Letras (Inglês e Literatura Correspondente) pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2004) e doutorado em Teoria e História Literária pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2013). Atualmente é professor Adjunto da Universidade do Estado da Bahia. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Literaturas de Língua Inglesa, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: literatura de língua inglesa, cinema e adaptação cinematográfica. É professor permanente no Programa de Pós-graduação em Crítica Cultural.
