Abstract

The purpose of this presentation is to call the attention of physics teachers, researchers in physics teaching as well as physicists to the challenges and mistakes of physics education in the 21st century. Knowledge of physics is relevant for citizenship. Physics is at the basis of most contemporary technologies. However, the teaching of physics nowadays is based on traditional methods centered in the teacher, approaching 19th century contents, and mainly focused on preparing students for testing. The well-known result is that high school and college students do not like physics, take it only when it is required and just want to pass the exams. It is high time to review this mode of physics education.
