Oilseed rape (BrassicanapusL.) varietal mixtures: an alternative to increase crop diversity in extensive systems intemperate agro-ecological transition in Argentina

Mixtures of rapeseed canola varieties were evaluated as an alternative in order to increase cultivated biodiversity and improve the use of resources in temperate extensive systems. Two field trials were conducted. In trial 1, two cultivars were mixed in different proportions under two levels of nitrogen availability. In test 2, five cultivars were evaluated in different combinations. Seed yield was higher than expected in mixtures than in monocultures, indicating a complementary effect on resource use, especially in nitrogen-limiting conditions without no fertilizer. The best result was observed when Impulse and Nolza 531 cultivars were mixed. The results indicate that mixtures of varieties of canola rapeseed can be appropriately selected as an ecological alternative to increase crop diversity in temperate extensive systems and result in better utilization of resources, which is important for agro-ecological systems in transition.
