The objective of this work was to study the effect of pyroligneous extract (PE) on newly hatched larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in the concentractions 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0% of PE, with 10 replicates. Pieces of corn leaf (5 x 3 cm) were dipped in for 30 seconds and then were placed in Petri dishes with filter paper to air-dry. The evaluations of biology of the surviving insects were conducted after two days, whose plates were cleaned by placing a section of untreated leaf; two days later, the plates were again cleaned, now putting a section of the treated foil, repeating the process until obtaining the death of the larvae or pupae. There was a significant difference only in the larval stage, and the concentration of 6.0%, larval viability was only 40.0%, with no statistical differences in concentrations of 4.0 and 2.0%, with viabilities of 55.0 and 60.0%, respectively, but differed from the control which showed a high viability of larvae of 90.0%. In the duration of the larval stage, only the highest concentration of PE significant difference compared to control, with an average of 11.9 days of larval duration compared to 19.1 days of control. The pupae were not affected by PE. Thus, the pyrolegneous extract functioned as an alternative product causing an excellent action on fall armyworm.
