Abstract

The sustainability of six horticultural organic farms in La Plata was analyzed by means of a set of indicators based on the information available in certifying entities. Ecological and socioeconomic variables were evaluated. The evaluation of sustainability by means of indicators allows detecting in a simple clear and objective manner some critical points in farms sustainability. The organic farms presented important differences between them, showing a good ecological sustainability but with some soil management problems. Soil management practices were less sustainable than biodiversity and soil organic matter management. The socioeconomic indicator was more variable between farms and was far from the ideal value, mainly due to a high economical risk. A positive relationship between economic stability and years under organic agriculture was found. These results confirm the need to evaluate sustainability of agroecosystems by means of indicators as a useful tool in the organic certification process
