In this article, we deal with lexical and grammatical metaphors in relation to students’ learning in Natural and Social Sciences. The topic is studied from the perspective of the discourse analysis of textbooks, students and teachers. The findings of our studies show that metaphors seem to constitute a problem for students in text comprehension: the lexical metaphors because of the lack of referents and of their use out of their normal context; and the grammatical metaphors because of the loss of information they imply. We will try to outline a critical analysis of these linguistic features and present a proposal for the adequate methodological treatment of metaphors in the classroom.
