Tourist and heritage perception of the insular landscape in Mexico: Janitzio (Michoacán) and Mexcaltitán (Nayarit)

The island landscape presents peculiar characteristics that manifest in different areas such as spatial, socioeconomic, and cultural aspects. Thus, the perception of the island environment has fostered unique representations of the lake regions of Janitzio in the state of Michoacán and Mexcaltitán in the state of Nayarit, consequently, patrimonial imaginaries and tourist for both residents and visitors, which can reveal key data for their research. This study undertakes a general comparison of socio-spatial perception between these two island communities, specifically analyzing factors and concepts involved in tourist perception, as well as the conception and appropriation of heritage by both residents and visitors of these small territories. Similar methodologies were employed with the same objective, based on the geography of perception and using tools such as interviews, questionnaires, and participant observation, aiming to explore the endogenous and exogenous valuation and significance of these islands, which are highly representative of their respective states.
