The lake of Patzcuaro is an important water body in Michoacán, Mexico; this area has been inhabited by the Purépecha from pre-Hispanic times. This study focuses on three island communities of the lake —Yunuén, Pacanda and Jarácuaro— with the purpose of understanding the settlements’ morphology and the meaning of its architecture. To that end, a methodology was designed in order to identify the settlements’ particularities’ regarding the lacustrine landscape, the morphological characteristics and the inhabitants’ perception. The investigation process, in addition to helping recognize each island’s particularities, reveals how morphological and perception studies can contribute to the understanding of the meanings associated with the urban-architectonic referents in each island.
