The Monumento às Bandeiras is a matter of public controversy in São Paulo's society of the 21st century: such heritage has suffered various non-regulated by legal codes appropriations and, in some of these, its extension was taken over by demonstrators or targeted by graffities. Through the city's newspapers, two narratives were established. The first narrative defends severe punishment and investigation of the offenders, in addition to immediate restoration by public authorities. The second narrative accuses the monument of celebrating the indigenous genocide and demands its demolition. In this context, we suggest that the political meanings of the Monument to the Flags should be highlighted in this article, as a way of understanding the qualifications and challenges that it holds to the discussion of publicity in the city of São Paulo. Therefore, we emphasize that the Monument has never been object of consensus and that its value has always been evaluated beyond the aesthetic sense.
